Two Cups Of Tea A Day Reduces The Risk Of Memory Loss!

A new US research study shows that consuming two cups of tea or one glass of red wine can improve your memory and keep it sharp even when you get older. The researchers found that foods rich in antioxidant flavonols are helpful in slowing memory decline as age progresses.

The study was done by Dr.Thomas Holland of Rush University Medical Center, Chicago. Another study done in 2017 by researchers at Tianjin University, China also found similar results of green tea providing benefits that would reduce the risk of dementia.

Dr.Holland observed that in order to have a healthy brain you need to take some simple steps like having enough fruits and veggies and also drinking tea once or twice a day.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately six million people are living in the US with Alzheimer’s. This figure is projected to rise to around thirteen million by 2050. Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disorder and the most common form of dementia.

The cognitive decline that accompanies these conditions is a cause of concern for older people. Memory loss is one of the main symptoms of these conditions. So this is good news for people who consume tea consistently as the flavonols in it are taking care of the brain cells and stopping them from deteriorating at a faster rate. 

Red wine was always known to be beneficial for the heart and brain. But now this new research study also makes a strong case for red wine as it also contains antioxidants. The study was conducted for a period of seven years by monitoring around 961 Americans who were in the age group of the ’70s and ’80s.

The flavonols were categorized into five different types and found that Kaempferol, a type of flavonol, had the most benefits and was found in leafy veggies. Quercetin, another form of flavonol, was ranked third and these were mainly found in tea, apples, and tomatoes. 

Globally, dementia cases are growing, yet scientists and doctors have no solution. It seems the only way to prevent these cognitive disorders is to maintain a healthy diet and active lifestyle. The participants of the study were made to answer some questions related to memory and cognition.

They were also asked about their lifestyle, diet, and exercise routines. The problem of cognitive decline in older people has been associated with a lot of factors. Stress, lack of nutrient diet, side-effects of long-term medications, etc. can all lead to a gradual cognitive decline. Some people are genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s or conditions related to dementia.

Will drinking Tea reduces memory loss?

Once the condition kicks in, it will not be much of a problem in the initial years but slowly the situations will change and individuals will find it harder to manage their basic daily routine. So assistive help will be needed and there are lots of in-home care services available in the US.

These services would provide help for a person to manage the daily needs of the elderly in their own homes. Nursing homes or retirement communities are other options that a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia-related conditions can opt for. 

Conclusion

Among the different types of teas, green tea is known to be one of the best sources of antioxidant flavonols. Black Tea contains fewer amounts compared to green tea. At the same time, green tea is not advised for people with diabetes or preexisting liver conditions as they are rich in caffeine. Overall, these recent studies show that drinking one or two cups of tea daily is beneficial.
