Of course, it’s difficult to treat pain if you don’t know its cause, but you can always try popular painkillers, such as Paracetamol. The best option, however, would be using Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs as the pain in the rib area is often caused by some inflammation process. The most common available drug is Ibuprofen. It might be very effective as it not only cures the inflammation, but can also bring you relief from pain.

You should also have a closer look at your diet as pain under your right rib cage is often connected with your digestive process. You may get surprised, but even something as simple as drinking a lot of water on a daily basis may bring spectacular results. To remove the toxins from your organism and boost metabolism, start a day from drinking a glass of mineral water with freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Avoid fast food and highly processed food. Instead consume a lot of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and food rich in fiber. Also eat different kinds of meat, fish, and seafood. You will quickly see that your digestive system is grateful for these changes and you will simply feel better.

Unfortunately, in case of some more serious conditions, such as kidney stones, gallstones, or chest injuries, you will need to follow your doctor’s advice as sometimes a surgery is only possible treatment here.

How Serious Is It?

You’ve probably been wondering if pain under your right rib cage is something which requires a medical consultation or maybe you can manage it on your own.

You need to be reasonable here and observe your pain. If it’s severe, happens frequently, and over-the-counter painkillers, such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen don’t help you, for sure you need to make an appointment with your doctor.

You should even consult him immediately if the pain is accompanied by other worrying symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or fever, very low blood pressure, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, or when the pain spreads to your left arm or jaw.

Remember that only your doctor may give you the right diagnosis after a detailed, medical evaluation. Moreover, the sooner you know the cause of your pain, the sooner you will start a proper treatment and recover.

    1. Valencia, I noticed your post when I was googling pain in right rib cage at night which I get almost every night, but I believe its just gas but if the pain travels to the back I think you may have gallstones. Of course, I am not a doctor so I would check with my doctor and see what tests you should have for your problem.

When I was younger I use to get these pains all the time went for tests and dr. told me I had polyps on my gallbladder but he believed that the pain I was experiencing was from stress not the gallbladder.

    2. Those were my symptoms when I had gall stones. A while after eating fatty foods, the body tells the gall bladder to send bile down to digest. If a stone gets caught in the valve, the bile pushes but can’t get out. The pain was usually impossible to fix and I would feel best on my knees curled forward into a ball.

    3. I’ve had the same exact problem for a year now. It doesn’t happen every night , but the frequency of occurances has increased and the pain is excruciating. I don’t know what to do either. I was in a car accident 15 years ago, so I thought it was because of my back problems. However, my PT thinks it could be my gallbladder. My doctor doesn’t want to do any scans until I’m experiencing the pain so hopefully something will show up, but it only happens at night like around midnight and is gone by morning. So my PT and I are at a loss for what to do.

  7. Hi,

For the past 6-8 months I experienced pain in the middle right side of my back between my ribs. Other symptoms included constant gas and burping mostly when I woke up in the morning, and frequent urination and bowel movements. After seeing several doctors who weren’t able to pinpoint a problem, I switched to a new primary care doctor who sent me for an ultrasound, blood testing, stool test, and urin test. He found evidence of an infection in my gallbladder which he thinks may be the cause of the pain. Today, he prescribed antibiotics as a treatment and I’m praying it will work. I’ve been in so much pain, I haven’t been myself over the past several months. It’s been very demoralizing waking up and struggling through each day with this kind of pain in back/ribs. If anyone similar pain between ribs, ask you doctor to check for infection in your gallbladder. I finally have hope to get the pain removed from my body. Good luck everyone with your healing process!
