Numbness in your feet or hands is usually nothing serious. However, it can be very annoying as it’s a tingling feeling, which constantly makes you move your feet or hands. Apart from that you may also experience a burning sensation in your joints. You can feel a kind of ache in your hands or feet, or they might be weak.

If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms, you can try some of the home remedies to treat the problem naturally. Remember, though, that natural remedies don’t work as quickly as medicines and you need to use them for some time to see the first positive results. However, their great advantage is that they rarely cause any side effects.

What Are The Causes of Numbness

As numbness in feet or hands is quite common, there are also various causes of the phenomenon. Some of them are very trivial such as putting too much pressure on your hand or foot, exposure to cold, poor circulation of blood, and deficiency of magnesium or vitamin B12.

Numbness may also occur when your nerve has been injured or compressed. Some more serious causes of the problem include diabetes, blood infection, stroke, active thyroid, or scar tissue. Often your lifestyle is to blame as people who drink a lot of alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or don’t do any sports suffer from numbness more frequently.

If the feeling of numbness lasts just a few minutes, you shouldn’t worry about it, but if it happens regularly and it lasts for a long period of time, you should visit your doctor to get a proper treatment. No matter what the reason of your numbness is, you may start with one of the following remedies and see if they bring some positive results.

1. Regular Exercises

If you often deal with the problem of numbness, you should take up regular exercises. When you move, you boost the circulation of blood and oxygen in your body, which can prevent strange sensations or numbness in any part of your body. What’s more, staying physically active will make you more mobile and healthy.

It’s recommended to exercise five days a week, for at least thirty minutes. Aerobic or cardiovascular trainings will be a great option. However, activities which you can do in the fresh air, such as running, walking, riding a bike, will help a lot too. Swimming is also a wonderful option as it can fantastically relax all your muscles and therefore help to deal with numbness.

In the morning yoga exercises are a fantastic idea. You should do it for about twenty minutes when your stomach is still empty. It will boost your blood flow and help you get rid and prevent numbness in different body parts.

Remember, though, to always wear high quality sports shoes, which support your feet well and avoid exercises which actually cause the feeling of numbness in your hands or feet.

2. Warm Compresses

While regular exercising will bring you some positive effect after some time, a warm compress will bring you immediate relief from  numbness. Actually, it’s the first thing you should do when you start to feel strange sensations in any part of your body. It has no side effects so it can be safely used by both the older and the younger.

A warm compress applied on the affected area of your body will improve the blood circulation and will relax your muscles or nerves. You can simply soak a soft cloth in hot, but no too hot, water and put in on the area of your body in which you feel numbness.

You should keep the cloth on your skin for about seven minutes. Soak the cloth several times in the water if it cools down too quickly.

Of course, you can also use a special heating pad, but a hot shower or bath will help a lot as well. Some people choose bottles with hot water or socks filled with rice which was previously warmed up in the microwave.

3. Massages

Another simple, yet effective way to get rid of annoying numbness in your feet or hands. When you massage your hands or feet, you stimulate blood circulation, and boost the nerves and muscles. As a result, the numbness in your feet or hands should go away just after the massage.
