Earlier, the social media platform suspended its $8 subscription program. This step was taken to stop users from impersonating big brands. Now the latest paid verification system is an attempt to differentiate between users, depending on their financial status. This would help the platform generate the required revenue.

Every company that has an official page on Twitter would receive the gold check mark. It would protect their account from impersonation. Their account would have a blue tick mark and their name and profile image would be of the brand name.

When the new paid verification system was introduced, there was an account that posed as Nintendo Inc. and had a Super Mario picture with a middle finger. Not only this, there was another page that turned itself into the official Eli Lilly & Co. (a pharmaceutical giant). This profile posted fake news saying that insulin would be free now. This forced the actual company to issue an apology. Another alleged Tesla Inc. account spread a joke regarding the safety records of the car company.

After such incidents, Elon Musk has taken a step to relaunch the paid verification system. Here, all the government accounts would receive a grey check mark. Although Musk hasn’t clarified if the government accounts include lawmakers or if it is only for the official government profiles, including CIA and GOVUK. If any individual pays, his/her Twitter account would receive a blue tick mark.

Every verified Twitter account would be authenticated manually so that nothing is missed. This process would be more complicated as Twitter is losing its workforce. This happened after Elon Musk, the new CEO slashed the headcount.

Elon Musk is attempting to launch the paid verification system for the second time after the first one proved to be futile. The color coding system might bring more stability to this space although it would delay the entire process.

CEO from SocialProof Security, the cyber security firm “Rachel Tobac” said that conducting the verification process would need a large and robust team. In her email, she also said that since the workforce is decreased, it is yet to be seen if the practice would minimize fraudulent activities, scams, and impersonations. It is easy for scammers to see how they can manipulate the system to impersonate official accounts.

On Friday, Elon Musk took to Twitter and said that if there is any kind of deliberate deception or impersonation, it would lead to the suspension of the account. It is yet to be seen how the plan works out. The CEO also said that every individual has to have a second tiny logo. This would show that the individual belongs to an organization (once the organization has confirmed the same).

In the latest tweet by Elon Musk, it wasn’t mentioned if this new paid verification system would charge $7.99 per month or not.

The final charges are yet to be declared and we still have to see what new changes Elon Musk brings to the table. Twitter’s faith is undecided.
