Family Meals: How Important Are They?

Strategies for Promoting Family Meals
  1. Try to make family meals a priority
  2. Aim for at least 3-4 meals a week
  3. Strive to make mealtimes pleasurable, enjoyable and engaging
  4. Share the meal preparation and cooking with other family members
  5. Keep mealtime preparation simple, easy and nutritious
  6. Be flexible with the time or place of meals (e.g., family picnic before sports).
  7. Teach children to cook and be involved with meal preparation
  8. Create a relaxed setting for meals (clear non-food items from the table, turn off the television, don't answer the phone)
  9. Socialize and avoid topics likely to lead to conflict
