"Students should be given tools to be critical and ethical users of information in a world that is overwhelmed with bad information, advertising and other ‘stuff’."

Michelle Powers, library media specialist at Mission High School in San Francisco, CA, knows that the Internet is a double edged sword for students. That's why she has designed classes and resources for students empowering them to use the Internet to benefit their learning, not detract from it. She makes sure that her students understand how to evaluate information on the web for accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and coverage. In addition, she teaches students to use Net Trekker, a cross between a search engine and a database, to ensure that students find accurate information through their searches, not Internet trash.

"I also work closely with teachers to find the best sites for information depending on the project. I make web pages for each of the projects so that the students don't spend a lot of time searching through bad stuff, instead they are researching already evaluated sites."
