What Ads Say, What They Mean  Print this page

In addition to the many visual tricks TV ads use to get us to buy their products, they also speak to us in ways designed to make us feel we need or would benefit from what they're selling. Read the following voiceovers or slogans from TV ads for various products or brand names. In the empty space, identify what the ad is really saying.  Use the media messages list that was developed by the group, as well as other messages that seem appropriate.

  • Slogan or voiceover (product or brand)  You add real meaning or emotional appeal.
  • For example:  Have it your way. (Burger King) I can have whatever I want.
  • Kids have to be strong inside and out to make it in today's competitive world. (Crest)
  • We need to connect. Food brings us together - let's make something good. (Kraft Foods)
  • Imagine the world's most perfect roommate. (Marie Callender's frozen dinners)
  • The most capable sport utility vehicle ever. (Jeep Grand Cherokee)
  • What good days are like - every day. (Nasonex nasal spray)
  • Who's going to be there for you? Who are you going to turn to when you're in doubt? (USWest Dex Yellow Pages)
  • Make your own rules. Stand out. Have your cake and eat it too. Hot set of wheels, money left to burn. (Pontiac Sunfire)
  • When you're here, you're family. (Olive Garden restaurant)
  • The relentless pursuit of exhilaration.  The relentless pursuit of perfection. (Lexus)
  • Do you believe in miracles? I believe. Never has so little done so much for so many. (Victoria's Secret Miracle Bra)
  • Little kids get what they want - why shouldn't you? (Toyota Camry)
  • Life's better here. (US West)
